Creating a link on the desktop

There are three types of links you can create on your KDE desktop: Links to a location, links to an application, and links to a hardware device.

Contents

Link to a Location

A "location" means a file or directory somewhere on your hard drive, your local network, or the Internet.

MEPIS 8.5 and 11

MEPIS 8.5 and 11 use the Folder View by default, so you can simply click on KMenu and navigate to the application you want, then drag it to the open desktop and release it. You can also right click and choose Send to Panel or Desktop, which puts an icon to that place.

MEPIS 8

  • From Konqueror, drag the file or folder icon to the desktop and choose "Link here". If you are browsing the web, you can "grab" a hyperlink and do the same. You can also grab the address in the address bar and drag it to the desktop.
  • Alternately, you can manually specify a location:
  1. Middle-click on the desktop
  2. Select "Create new > Link to location". You will get a small properties dialog for the link.
  3. Type in the location and a description (which will be the shortcut name).

Link to Application

You can create a desktop shortcut to any application, script, or command on the system.

  • If it is not on K menu, you can create an icon directly on the desktop:
  1. Middle-click on the desktop
  2. Select "Create new > Link to application". You will get a properties dialog for the link.
  3. Type the name of the application
  4. Select "Application" tab
  5. Enter the specific command to launch the application in the "Command" box
  6. In the "General" tab click on the icon to choose an icon for the link.

Link to Device

You can link to a device, such as a DVD drive or USB flash drive. Even a Floppy.

MEPIS 8.5 and 11

Right-click the desktop in default M 8.5 (folder view) > Create New > Link to Device . [select the device you want to link to].

MEPIS 8

  1. Middle-click on the desktop
  2. Select "Create new > Link to device >" and pick the type of device you want to link to
  3. You will get a properties dialog for the device link. On the "device" tab, make sure the correct device is selected.

For hardware, you can choose when the link should be displayed in the following manner:

  1. Middle-click on the desktop: choose Configure Desktop > Behavior > Device icons
  2. Click the tab Device icons
  3. Choose when you want icons to appear by checking the appropriate box
