DNT Optics HYDRA connection to Mac via USB not working. Any fast solutions?

Has anyone successfully connected a DNT Optics HYDRA to a Mac? I am trying to connect using a standard USB cable, but nothing works at all.
Could anyone share their experience with this setup? I saw various connection programs available online and wanted to know if they were actually worth downloading or trying out.

Connecting the DNT Optics HYDRA directly to a Mac over USB usually isn’t enough. macOS sees it as an Android device and won’t recognize it normally. The developer confirms this on the firmware upgrade page.

You’ll need an app that lets macOS access Android devices. I use MacDroid to move files between my Samsung phone and MacBook. It should work with the HYDRA too, although I can’t confirm that myself since I don’t own one.

The setup is generally something like this:

  1. Enable Developer Options on the device.
  2. Open the Developer Options menu and turn on USB Debugging.
  3. Add the device in the Mac app and follow the instructions for its Android version.
  4. Select MTP or ADB mode in the app.
  5. When the device shows a USB prompt, choose File Transfer.
  6. Click Mount. The files should then appear in Finder.

If MacDroid doesn’t work, you could also try a newer alternative to Android File Transfer or OpenMTP. They all handle the same basic problem, so it may come down to which one works best with the HYDRA.

If you try it, post back with what worked and which method was easiest.

Don’t enable USB debugging unless you actually need ADB. For normal file access, unlock the HYDRA, select File Transfer/MTP from its USB notification, then mount it through MacDroid. If that USB mode never appears, a Mac driver probably won’t fix it because the HYDRA itself isn’t presenting an MTP connection.

If the HYDRA does not show under System Information > USB, this is not an MTP or Finder problem yet. MacDroid cannot mount a device that macOS has not detected at the hardware level. Open System Information, select USB, then reconnect the HYDRA and watch for a new Android, MTP, or unknown USB entry.

If nothing changes, connect it directly instead of through a hub or dock, keep the HYDRA powered on and unlocked, and restart both devices. A cable can provide power while its data connection fails, so it is worth trying a cable known to transfer files, even if the original cable charges normally. On newer MacBooks, check Privacy & Security for an “Allow accessories to connect” prompt or setting too.

If the HYDRA does appear in the USB list but not Finder, then @codeminer9255 is right that the next step is selecting File Transfer/MTP on the HYDRA itself. That USB notification may only appear after the device is unlocked and reconnected. MacDroid or OpenMTP can handle the MTP side because Finder does not mount Android storage by itself.

I would leave USB debugging off unless you specifically choose an ADB connection. It is not a general fix for missing USB hardware, and enabling it can make troubleshooting more confusing by changing which connection method the app expects. The useful dividing line is simple: absent from System Information means cable, adapter, permission, or HYDRA USB behavior; present there but absent from Finder means you need MTP mode and a Mac transfer app.

Don’t keep installing multiple Android transfer apps and leaving them open at the same time. MacDroid, OpenMTP, and similar tools can compete for the same MTP connection, which makes a detected device appear to connect and immediately disappear.

Pick one app, quit the others completely, then reboot the HYDRA before connecting it. Open the transfer app first, plug the HYDRA directly into the Mac, power it on, and give it 20 to 30 seconds. Try both USB-C orientations if an adapter is involved, since some cheap adapters and cables behave oddly with data even though charging works.

I agree with @zeroshift5667 that System Information is the useful dividing line. If the HYDRA appears there, stop changing cables and concentrate on the MTP app. If it never appears, MacDroid cannot fix that because it has no device to communicate with.

For a firmware file that needs transferring immediately, borrowing a Windows laptop may honestly be faster than debugging macOS MTP. That is not a satisfying permanent answer, but it can tell you whether the HYDRA’s USB connection works at all. If Windows cannot detect it with a known data cable either, I would start suspecting the scope’s USB port rather than the Mac.

Test the exact Mac port and cable with an Android phone before installing anything else. If that phone does not appear under System Information > USB, the HYDRA is probably not the problem. Replace the cable first. A lot of “standard USB cables” are charge-only, and there is no reliable way to tell by looking at them.

If the phone appears but the HYDRA does not, stop messing with MacDroid, OpenMTP, drivers, and USB debugging. None of those can repair a connection that never reaches macOS. Check the HYDRA’s USB socket for dirt or a loose fit, remove any dock, and test it on another computer with the same known-good data cable. That gives you a much cleaner answer than cycling through software.

If the HYDRA does show in System Information, then install exactly one MTP app and make sure every competing transfer app is fully quit. I agree with @bash_anna56 on that. Android transfer programs are bad about grabbing the same device and making the connection look flaky. Keep the HYDRA unlocked, reconnect it, and select File Transfer rather than charging if the USB menu appears. Leave debugging disabled unless you are deliberately using ADB.

For copying recordings or screenshots, check whether the files are on a removable memory card. Pulling the card and using a Mac card reader is usually faster and less annoying than troubleshooting MTP. Do not assume that method works for a firmware update, though. Only place firmware on the card if the HYDRA’s update instructions specifically support that process.

The quickest diagnosis is basically this: another Android device works on that cable and Mac, but the HYDRA never appears anywhere. At that point the issue is on the HYDRA side, whether that means its USB mode, connector, or firmware. Contacting DNT support makes more sense than buying another Mac transfer application.

Check the HYDRA’s own settings menu for a USB mode option before you touch any Mac software. A lot of these thermal optics run a cut-down Android build that doesn’t pop the usual File Transfer notification everyone here is expecting. On some of them the USB behavior is buried in a system or connection menu and defaults to charge-only, so nothing shows up until you flip it manually on the device itself.

That’s the part I think the thread is skipping over. @vectorbyte5017node and @fusioncircuit9113 are right that System Information is your real dividing line, and testing a phone on the same cable and port is the fastest sanity check going. But a phone appearing while the HYDRA stays invisible doesn’t automatically mean a dead port or bad scope. It can just mean the HYDRA never enters a data mode because its firmware doesn’t expose one the way a normal phone does. Worth reading the actual DNT instructions for your firmware version, since some of these devices only present USB during a dedicated update mode and not for casual file browsing.

MacDroid is fine for the MTP side once the thing actually enumerates, no argument there. I just wouldn’t install it until you’ve confirmed macOS sees the device at all, otherwise you’re debugging an app for a connection that was never going to happen. And honestly, if all you want is pulling recordings, pop the memory card if it has a removable one. Skip the firmware-via-card idea though unless DNT specifically says that’s supported, because a botched update on an optic is a much worse afternoon than a stubborn USB cable.

You can waste an hour fixing MTP when USB may be unnecessary. If you only want a firmware update, try the DNT app’s OTA update option first; USB is still needed for direct file transfers.

For recordings, use the System Information test already suggested. No USB entry means no Mac transfer app will save the afternoon.

A USB-C-to-C cable and a USB-A-to-C cable can behave very differently with embedded devices like the HYDRA. Try the supplied USB-A data cable through a basic Mac adapter, with a charged 18650 installed and the scope fully powered on. The USB port can supply external power, but it does not charge the battery, which can make the connection state confusing. If that setup appears in System Information, then use one MTP app such as OpenMTP. If it still does not enumerate, test the same A-to-C setup on Windows before blaming macOS.

Don’t factory-reset the HYDRA chasing this problem. If it never appears in System Information with a known-good data cable, skip the transfer-app roulette and ask DNT whether your firmware actually exposes USB data to macOS.
