How do I log out of Netflix on my smart TV?

I signed into my Netflix account on a smart TV at a friend’s place and can’t figure out how to log out. The menus look different from my own TV at home and I’m worried my profile will stay signed in. Can someone walk me through the steps to properly sign out of Netflix on a TV so my account is secure?

This trips a lot of people up, especially on friends’ TVs where the layout looks weird. Do this on the friend’s TV first, then I’ll list a backup option from your phone.

On the smart TV

  1. Open Netflix on the TV.
  2. Go to the far left side of the screen.
Use the left arrow on the remote until a vertical menu shows up.
  3. Look for:
    • “Get Help”
      or
    • “Help”
      or
    • “Settings”
Sometimes you must go all the way down the left menu to see it.
  4. Open that.
  5. Choose “Sign out”.
  6. Confirm “Sign out” when it asks.

If you do not see a “Get Help” or “Settings” item

Try this secret code with the arrow keys on the TV remote while Netflix is open on the home screen:

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up

Do it slowly but not too slow. When it works, a “Get Help” or “Diagnostics” screen pops up. Then choose “Sign out”.

If there are multiple profiles

  1. From the Netflix home screen, press left to open the menu.
  2. Move up to your profile icon at the top.
  3. Press OK/Enter.
  4. On some TVs there is a “Sign out” option there. If you see it, select it.

If you already left your friend’s place and are worried

You cannot log out a specific TV remotely, but you can force all devices to log out, which kicks that TV off your account.

On your phone or computer

  1. Go to netflix.com in a browser.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  4. Go to “Account”.
  5. Scroll to “Security and Privacy”.
  6. Click “Sign out of all devices”.
  7. Confirm.

It takes up to an hour to log every device out. You will need to sign in again on your own TV at home.

If your friend says the TV is still logged in after that

Tell them to:

  1. Open Netflix.
  2. If it still shows your profile, try to play something.
  3. Netflix should ask to sign in again once the global logout fully applies.
  4. If not, repeat the arrow key code on the TV and sign out there.

Quick checks so you know it worked

  • Your profile should not show up on their TV at all.
  • When they open Netflix, it should ask them to sign in or choose their own account, not yours.
  • From your side, under “Recent device streaming activity” in “Account”, you should not see their TV anymore after some time.

Do the on-TV sign out first if you still have access to the TV. Use “Sign out of all devices” as a safety net if you are already gone or not sure it logged out.

Yeah, Netflix really likes hiding the “log out” stuff like it’s a boss fight.

Since @himmelsjager already covered the normal “Get Help / Settings” and secret code method, here are a few different angles that might help, especially if the menus are weird or branded (Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, etc.):

1. Use the TV’s own app manager instead of Netflix menus

On a lot of smart TVs you can basically kick Netflix out from the system side:

  • Open the TV’s main settings (not inside Netflix).
  • Look for something like:
    • Apps
    • Applications
    • Installed Apps
    • Manage installed apps
  • Find Netflix in the list.
  • Use:
    • Clear data or Reset app or Delete app data
  • Confirm.

That usually wipes all saved accounts, so your login is gone even if Netflix itself is being uncooperative. This is my go‑to when I don’t trust I actually found the right sign‑out spot.

2. If it’s a streaming device (Roku / Fire Stick / Apple TV)

Sometimes you’re not dealing with a “smart TV” app, you’re dealing with a stick/box plugged in.

Roku:

  • Press the Home button on Roku remote.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Go to Apps or Streaming channels (varies).
  • Highlight Netflix.
  • Choose Remove channel.
This kicks your account off that Roku entirely. They can reinstall Netflix with their own login.

Amazon Fire TV:

  • Go to Settings from Fire home screen.
  • Choose Applications.
  • Go to Manage Installed Applications.
  • Select Netflix.
  • Hit Clear data (and optionally Clear cache).
This signs everyone out on that Fire TV Netflix app.

Apple TV:

  • Open Settings on Apple TV.
  • Go to Apps.
  • Select Netflix.
  • Look for Reset, Delete app, or just delete the app from the home screen.
    Reinstalling forces a fresh sign‑in.

3. Remote “nuke” plus password change

I slightly disagree with relying only on “Sign out of all devices” like @himmelsjager mentioned. Netflix will eventually kick everything off, but the timing is inconsistent.

To really lock it down once you’re home:

  1. Go to Netflix in a browser.
  2. Change your password first.
  3. Check the option that says something like Require all devices to sign in again with new password (or similar wording).
  4. Then, if available, also use Sign out of all devices as a backup.

Changing the password with that extra checkbox is usually faster and more reliable than just waiting for the global sign‑out to propagate.

4. Quick way to verify you’re gone

Ask your friend to:

  • Open Netflix.
  • See if:
    • It shows your profile, or
    • It asks them to sign in / create a new account.
  • If they still see you and can immediately play something, the device is still authorized.
  • If it shows your profile but errors when playing, the global logout / password change probably kicked in, and they just need to back out and sign in with their own account.

5. For the future so this doesn’t happen again

When you have to log in on someone else’s TV:

  • Prefer using your own device to cast (Chromecast, AirPlay, etc.) instead of signing the TV into your account.
  • Or sign in, watch, then before you leave, do:
    • App’s Get Help / Settings ⇒ Sign out, and
    • The TV’s Clear data / Reset app as a double tap.

Paranoid? Yes. But not as bad as finding out their cousins are binging on your profile three weeks later.
