How do I scan a QR code on my iPhone?

I recently needed to scan a QR code on my iPhone but couldn’t figure it out. I tried opening the camera app, and I’m not sure if there’s a specific setting, feature, or step I might have missed. Is there a particular way to scan QR codes on an iPhone? Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Oh boy, scanning a QR code on your iPhone is like finding the secret passage to Narnia—so mysterious until you figure it out, and then you’re just like, ‘Oh, seriously? That’s it?’ Here’s the drama-free explanation:

Open your regular Camera app—yes, the same one you use for your 37 selfies a day. Hold your iPhone up to the QR code, like you’re just about to snap a pic of it. Don’t actually take the picture though. The camera is smarter than that. A notification bubble thing should appear at the top of the screen, usually saying something like “Open [link] in Safari” or whatever app the QR code is directing you to. Tap that little banner, and BAM, QR code scanned.

If nothing pops up, make sure you’ve got this feature turned on. Head over to Settings > Camera and make sure “Scan QR Codes” is toggled on. If it’s off, then yeah, you’ve been outsmarted by a setting. Happens to the best of us.

Still no luck? Maybe you need to clean your camera lens or stop waving the phone around like it’s a magic wand. Keep it steady, and make sure there’s decent lighting. Low light = sad QR code experience.

And if somehow THAT doesn’t work, are you sure your phone is not like from 2012? Anything newer than the iPhone 6S should work just fine. Or, you know, download a QR scanning app from the App Store and call it a day.

Congrats, you’re now QR code royalty.

I love how @shizuka made it sound like scanning a QR code is this grand mystical adventure. Seriously though, scanning a QR code isn’t rocket science—but sometimes even the simplest features on iPhones hide, waiting to baffle us.

Here’s one additional trick they didn’t mention: Control Center shortcuts. If your camera app just isn’t cutting it or you’re in a hurry, you can actually add a QR Code Scanner directly to your Control Center. Go to Settings > Control Center, scroll down to “More Controls,” and add “Code Scanner.” Now, when you pull down your Control Center, BAM, one-tap access to a QR scanner that doesn’t rely on the camera’s default behavior.

Also, not to throw any shade here, but I prefer using the scanner option from the Control Center sometimes because it goes straight to the target app or link without hanging for a second. Sometimes the camera wants to play a guessing game with whether it sees your QR code or someone’s random Cheez-It box.

Another hack for tech dinosaurs like me: if you’re in an app, like Wallet or a payment service, or even navigating through Instagram, check if there’s an in-app QR scanner. Many apps integrate QR functionality, so there’s a tiny chance you don’t even need your Camera or external apps. Convenience level: unlocked.

And hey, can we talk about lighting for a sec? @shizuka mentioned it, but honestly, if lighting’s bad, your iPhone becomes a diva and won’t acknowledge the QR code even exists. It’s like ‘meh, you can try again later when I feel appreciated.’ Just tilt your phone slightly or adjust the light source before running to third-party apps—seriously underrated advice.

Lastly, if none of the above works, maybe it’s not you, maybe it’s the QR code! Some are printed all wonky or damaged, so it’s not always the phone. Try another QR code if you have one nearby to check if it’s even working.

And believe me—this isn’t a feature buried in a million settings with unlockable DLC. Once it clicks, you’ll wonder how this simple thing ever tripped you up. iPhones just want to feel fancy about basic stuff like this.
