My Umang App has suddenly stopped working correctly and I can’t access key government services I urgently need. I’ve tried reinstalling, clearing cache, and updating my phone, but nothing fixes the issue. Can someone guide me on possible solutions, known bugs, or settings I might be missing so I can get the Umang App working again?
Had the same issue with UMANG a few weeks back. Your steps are good, but UMANG often breaks for reasons outside your phone. Try this sequence:
-
Check basic stuff
• Switch from WiFi to mobile data or the other way. UMANG often fails on some office or college networks.
• Set date and time to “Automatic” from network. Wrong time kills some govt apps. -
App level fixes
• Go to Settings → Apps → UMANG → Permissions.
Give it permission for Phone, SMS, Storage, Location. Then force stop and reopen.
• Under Battery settings, remove UMANG from battery optimization. Some phones kill it in background.
• If you use VPN, turn it off and try again. -
Check service status
Sometimes UMANG opens but specific services like EPFO, PAN, DigiLocker, etc stop working because the backend department server is down.
Try 2 or 3 different services inside the app.
If none work, issue is with UMANG server or your login.
If only one department fails, problem sits on that department side. -
Clear data the “hard” way
You said you cleared cache. Do this too:
Settings → Apps → UMANG → Storage → Clear data and Clear cache both.
Then log in fresh with mobile and OTP.
Re-link your services like EPFO etc. -
Alternate login path
Instead of mobile number, try logging in with DigiLocker or Aadhaar if available in your account. Sometimes a bug hits only mobile login. -
Test with another device
Install UMANG on a different phone with your same number.
If it works there, your main phone has some conflict, often with security apps, VPN, or custom DNS like AdGuard, Blokada, Private DNS. Turn those off and test. -
Contact support with details
UMANG Helpdesk:
• Email: customercare[at]umang.gov.in
• Toll Free: 1800-11-5246
Before you contact, note:
• Your registered mobile
• Phone model and Android / iOS version
• UMANG app version
• Exact time and service where it fails
• Screenshot of the error -
Temporary workarounds
Until it gets fixed you can try:
• UMANG web: https://web.umang.gov.in
• Direct portals:
EPFO: https://www.epfindia.gov.in
DigiLocker: https://digitallocker.gov.in
PMAY, PAN, etc from their own sites.
This combo helped me when the app stopped loading EPFO and vaccination records. The key was disabling Private DNS and logging in fresh after full data wipe.
Couple of extra angles you can try that @nachtschatten didn’t cover, or I’d handle a bit differently:
-
Check if it’s an account-level issue, not just the app
- Try logging into UMANG Web in a different browser in incognito/private mode.
- If it fails there too, even after OTP, then your profile itself may be glitched at UMANG’s side. In that case:
- Try “Forgot MPIN / Forgot Password” and reset everything.
- If reset works but services still don’t open, mention “account issue” clearly when you contact support.
-
Watch for specific error patterns
- Are you getting:
- Blank white screen after splash: often a compatibility issue or a stuck config.
- “Something went wrong / try again later” instantly: usually server-side or login token issue.
- Spinning loader forever only on a certain service: that department’s integration is broken.
- Note the exact step where it hangs (after OTP, after choosing service, etc.). Support actually does use that info.
- Are you getting:
-
Turn off “smart” security / cleaner apps completely
- I slightly disagree with relying only on battery optimization tweaks. Some “phone booster / cleaner / antivirus / app lock” apps literally block UMANG’s network calls.
- Fully uninstall those temporarily, not just disable.
- Also disable any adblocker at router level if you’re on home WiFi. UMANG sometimes hits domains that look like ad / tracking to filters.
-
Check language / region settings
- Go to phone Language & Region:
- Set region to India.
- Use English (India) or Hindi as system language, just to test.
- UMANG has glitched before for users with non-Indian regions or custom locales.
- Go to phone Language & Region:
-
Update Google services / WebView
- On Android:
- Update Android System WebView and Google Chrome from Play Store.
- UMANG uses WebView internally. If that’s outdated or broken, the app UI loads but the content screens die.
- On Android:
-
Try older or beta version
- Sometimes a fresh update of UMANG itself is the problem.
- If it started “suddenly” after an app update:
- Uninstall UMANG.
- Install an older APK from a reputable source like APKMirror.
Be careful here, only use trusted sources, and test just for troubleshooting. - If older version works, then it is 100% a bad app release and not your phone.
-
iOS specific (if you’re on iPhone)
- Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management
Remove any old MDM/profile that might restrict govt apps. - Also try:
- UMANG → turn Background App Refresh ON.
- In Screen Time, make sure it’s not restricted under Content & Privacy.
- Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management
-
When you contact UMANG support, ask for log analysis
- Here’s where I’d go a bit harder than @nachtschatten: don’t just send a screenshot.
- Ask them to:
- Check server logs for your mobile number at the timestamp you faced the issue.
- Confirm whether any KYC / Aadhaar / mobile mismatch flags are set on your account.
- If they say “everything is fine,” push them to check with the specific department service you’re trying to use (EPFO, PAN, etc.), because many times they quietly change an API and forget to tell UMANG.
-
Try a different SIM / network identity
- If you have dual SIM:
- Temporarily remove one SIM and keep only the one registered with UMANG.
- Turn off WiFi and use that SIM’s data only.
- There have been edge cases where UMANG got confused when data is from SIM2 and number is from SIM1.
- If you have dual SIM:
-
Absolute last resort: bypass UMANG permanently
- If you’re under urgent time pressure for govt work, don’t get stuck waiting on UMANG to behave.
- Set up direct accounts on the portals you use most:
- EPFO, DigiLocker, PAN, etc.
- Use UMANG only as a convenience layer, not your single point of failure. The app breaks more than it should, honestly.
If you can share:
- Phone model
- Android/iOS version
- Whether the issue is at login or inside a specific service
people here can probably narrow it further. Right now it sounds like either a WebView / security-app conflict or your UMANG profile being in some weird partial state on their backend.
